Easier climb takes us past the remains of Runkuracay lookout; from here we look across the snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera Vilcabamba. Traversing the Runkuracay Pass. The Inca Trail now becomes more apparent, descending past Yanacocha (The Black Lagoon), a dry lake; we reach the ancient complex of Sayacmarka. Then suddenly we enter the rain forest, at the route's highest Inca construction at Phuyupatamarka, camping nearby.
We are in open country again. Far away we get glimpses of Mounts Pumásillo and Salkantay, and thousands of feet below, we see once again the Urubamba River. Then the long descent down the amazing, never ending Inca steps begins.
Stopping off at the well-preserved remains of Wiñaywayna. At Intipunku, the Inca gate of the sun, we get our first sight of Machu Picchu.
